Privacy Policy
Overview
Prudence is an offline-first Android application. It makes no network requests of any kind — there is no account, no sync, and no connection to any bank, card issuer, or financial institution. It does not collect personal information and does not transmit any data to external servers or third parties. Every figure you enter stays on your device.
Information We Collect
Prudence does not collect any personal information. The app stores the following data locally on your device, in a private application folder:
- Your budgets — names, amounts, refill cadences, rollover settings, and which ones you marked essential
- Your ledger: the expenses you log, with amounts, dates, payee names you type, and any notes
- Recurring expense rules and the occurrences generated from them
- Income you record — paycheck details and deductions, net figures, annual amounts, or estimates, at whatever level of detail you choose to enter
- Windfalls and how you assigned them across budgets
- Figures you type into the calculators, and any profiles you create to keep separate sets of finances apart
- App settings and preferences
None of this data is linked to your identity, uploaded anywhere, or shared with any third party.
No Bank Connections
Prudence never connects to a bank, a card issuer, or an account-aggregation service. It does not ask for banking credentials, card numbers, or account numbers, and it has no ability to import transactions from a financial institution. Everything in the app is there because you typed it in or imported a file you supplied yourself.
How We Use Your Data
Data stored by Prudence is used solely to operate the app's features on your device:
- Showing what remains in each budget, and what will remain on a future date you choose
- Rolling unspent money or an overspend forward between periods
- Posting recurring expenses when they come due
- Distributing income and windfalls across your budgets
- Producing spending breakdowns and calculator results from your own numbers
- Restoring app state between sessions
Export & Import
Prudence includes optional backup and export features. You can export everything as a single JSON file, export one profile on its own, or export your ledger as a CSV, through Android's standard share sheet. You can import a Prudence backup through Android's system file picker. Neither process routes data through any server — all file operations are local and on-device, and any file you import is one you supply yourself. You choose what you do with exported files, and where they go.
Permissions Required
Prudence requests only what the operating system needs for optional features you choose to use:
- Notifications — only if you turn on the optional quick-capture notification, which is a shortcut into the expense entry screen. Prudence sends no notification content anywhere; these are generated on your device.
- Storage Access Framework — used for the optional import and export features through the system file picker and share sheet
Prudence does not request the camera, your contacts, your location, your photos, or the microphone, and it holds no internet permission.
Data Storage & Security
All app data is stored in a private application folder that belongs to Prudence and is not accessible to other apps. This data is removed when you uninstall Prudence. If you have Android's built-in backup enabled, your device OS may back up app data to your Google account; this is governed by Google's privacy policy, not ours.
Data Sharing
Prudence does not share any data with third parties. There are no analytics SDKs, crash reporting services, advertising networks, or external APIs integrated into the app.
Deleting Your Data
You can delete all data stored by Prudence at any time from within the app, by clearing the app's data in your Android settings (Settings → Apps → Prudence → Storage → Clear Data), or by uninstalling the app.
Not Financial Advice
Prudence's calculators are planning estimates, not financial or tax advice. Tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction and circumstances, and the ESPP tool models the United States federal §423 split only. Do not rely on it for filing.
Children's Privacy
Prudence does not knowingly collect any information from children. The app collects no personal information from any user, regardless of age.
Changes to This Policy
If this privacy policy changes, the updated version will be published at this URL with a revised effective date. Continued use of Prudence after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
