Privacy Policy
Overview
Brine is an offline-first Android application. It does not connect to the internet, does not collect personal information, and does not transmit any data to external servers or third parties. All data you create in Brine stays on your device.
A Note on Scope
Brine is a personal tracking and reminder tool, not food-safety or medical advice. The day offsets in its templates are typical starting points, not guarantees — real fermentation is judged by your own senses (taste, smell, bubbling, gravity, the float test) and varies with temperature, salinity, and recipe. Brine does not assess whether a ferment is safe to consume.
Information We Collect
Brine does not collect any personal information. The app stores the following data locally on your device, in a private application folder:
- Your ferments (name, optional type, start date, notes, status, and an optional card color)
- Your action items (titles, notes, day offsets, reminder times, recurrence settings, and whether each sends a notification)
- Your completion history (which scheduled occurrences you've checked off or skipped)
- Optional measurements you log (temperature, pH, specific gravity, and notes)
- Your custom templates and app preferences (default reminder time and the notifications toggle)
None of this data is linked to your identity, uploaded anywhere, or shared with any third party.
How We Use Your Data
Data stored by Brine is used solely to operate the app's features on your device:
- Building your Today view and each ferment's action timeline
- Scheduling local notifications for actions you've enabled them on
- Restoring app state between sessions
Notifications
Brine schedules local, on-device notifications to remind you of upcoming actions. These are generated and delivered entirely on your device by Android's notification system; no reminder data leaves your phone. You can disable notifications at any time in the app or in your Android system settings.
Export & Import
Brine includes optional export and import features. You can export your full data as a JSON file through Android's standard share sheet, and import a backup through Android's system file picker, which replaces your current data. Neither process routes data through any server — all file operations are local and on-device. You choose what you do with exported files.
Permissions Required
Brine requests only the access needed for features you actively use:
- Notifications — used to deliver the local reminders you schedule for ferment actions
- Storage Access Framework — used for the optional import and export features. Android manages file access through the system file picker and share sheet; no broad storage permission is required
Brine does not request access to your camera, photos, contacts, location, microphone, or any other sensitive system resource.
Data Storage & Security
All app data is stored in a private application folder that belongs to Brine and is not accessible to other apps. This data is removed when you uninstall Brine. If you have Android's built-in backup enabled, your device OS may back up app data to your Google account; this is governed by Google's privacy policy, not ours.
Data Sharing
Brine does not share any data with third parties. There are no analytics SDKs, crash reporting services, advertising networks, or external APIs integrated into the app.
Deleting Your Data
You can delete all data stored by Brine at any time using the in-app "Erase all data" option, by clearing the app's data in your Android settings (Settings → Apps → Brine → Storage → Clear Data), or by uninstalling the app.
Children's Privacy
Brine does not knowingly collect any information from children. The app collects no personal information from any user, regardless of age.
Changes to This Policy
If this privacy policy changes, the updated version will be published at this URL with a revised effective date. Continued use of Brine after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
